Tamarama has had some wonderfully strange chapters in its history. The headland once hosted Wonderland City amusement park, and the beach was even used as a stand-in for Gallipoli's Anzac Cove in a 1915 silent film.

There is very little of it, which is part of the appeal. The houses are cut into the sides of a steep gully with almost no flat land, many of them extensively rebuilt, and what flats exist are mostly conversions rather than purpose-built blocks.

Modern Tamarama life is rather more comfortable, but its carpet still has to deal with sand, salt, balconies and constant movement between indoors and the coast.
