Galston sits north of Dural on the rural edge of the Hills, a village centre surrounded by acreage, orchards and horse properties, with the national park wrapping around its northern and eastern sides.

Properties here are large and the houses are substantial, many of them built to take in the outlook and extended over the years. Long driveways, outbuildings and a good deal of ground between the front gate and the door are the norm.

Living on acreage changes what comes inside. Dust off the driveway in summer, mud off the paddock in winter and bark from the gums all arrive on boots at the same few doors, so the soil concentrates heavily at the entries and in the main walking line rather than spreading evenly through the house.
