Petersham's Portuguese community has given the suburb its own distinctive identity, including the Bairro Português precinct and annual celebrations of Portuguese food and culture. The housing is largely Federation and Victorian on compact blocks, semis and freestanding cottages through the quieter streets, with red brick walk-ups from the sixties and seventies on the busier roads.
