North Parramatta sits above the river north of the CBD, an older residential area with a good deal of heritage housing and a scattering of unit blocks along the main roads.

There are Victorian and Federation cottages here that predate most of the surrounding suburbs, many of them on small blocks with the original layout still intact, alongside post-war brick and later infill.

Houses of that age often have carpet laid over timber boards rather than a concrete slab. That changes the method rather than the result, because moisture has nowhere to go underneath and needs to be controlled carefully.
